Mauri Tū - investing in a healthy and happy city centre

About Mauri Tū - investing in a healthy and happy city centre

Investment in greening the city centre should be a major part of the city centre strategy to provide climate change resilience. It also provides comfort to pedestrians through shade and amenity.

Appropriate trees and vegetation must be part of buildings, urban streets and spaces. Access to city centre parks and open spaces will only become a more important and valuable asset in the future.

Urban farms and community compost hubs provide a new type of green commons that fosters community engagement, reduces waste and contributes to green space in the city.

Environmental benefits of green spaces

Improving access to and quality of green space in the city centre makes a major contribution to the health of our environment.

Increasing our environment through green spaces and urban forest planting provides:

  • biodiversity and species diversity
  • improvements to stormwater quality
  • decreased carbon footprint
  • reduction in the urban heat island effect
  • better air quality
  • reduced wind corridor severity.

Social benefits of green spaces

Green spaces and urban trees:

  • make us happier
  • improve our health and wellbeing
  • improve mood and offer a break from the busy city
  • enhance appearance of open spaces
  • provide shade, comfort and shelter.

Greening the city centre is an important part of improving liveability for its fast-growing resident, visitor and employee population.
