Aotea Quarter - leveraging public transport investment
About this opportunity
Already a cradle of civic and cultural activity at the heart of the Waihorotiu Queen Street Valley, the area around Aotea Square will undergo a major urban transformation during the life of the masterplan.
Why we're doing this
Transport investment in the area will drive greatly increased pedestrian flows through an expanded network of public space and laneways converging on Aotea Square.
How this would happen
New development opportunities including overbuild development above Aotea Station, a redeveloped and expanded Aotea Centre and the Civic Quarter development will redefine the western edge of Aotea Square and add significant activity and public life to the area.
The masterplan envisages opportunities to achieve the following outcomes associated with the planned investment in transport and development:
New development and mixed-uses
Further strengthening of the Quarter as the civic and cultural heart with new development opportunities on Council-owned land around the square bringing increased occupation and activation of the Quarter with a more diverse mix of uses.
Whare tāpere
Creation of a whare tāpere cultural facility opening onto the square.
Queen Street integration
Greater integration between Aotea Square and Queen Street as it transitions to a pedestrian priority street.
Laneway connections
Ensure new development delivers expanded and enhanced laneway connections converging on Aotea Square including new public laneways and through-building links.
Addressing Mayoral Drive
Establish a continuous building frontage to Mayoral Drive through new development opportunities addressing and activating the street edge and forming a new western gateway to the Quarter.
